BaZi Day Master Explained: The 10 Day Masters
In the Four Pillars of Destiny, the Day Master stands for you. Here are all ten, from Jia Wood (the great tree) to Gui Water (the morning rain).
Presented as cultural tradition, for reflection and fun.
In short
In BaZi (Four Pillars of Destiny), your Day Master is the Heavenly Stem of your birth day, and it stands for you in the chart. There are ten: Jia and Yi (Wood), Bing and Ding (Fire), Wu and Ji (Earth), Geng and Xin (Metal), and Ren and Gui (Water), each pair being one yang and one yin. It is a traditional framework for self-reflection, not a prediction.
What is BaZi?
BaZi (八字, "eight characters"), also called the Four Pillars of Destiny, is a traditional Chinese system for reading a birth moment. Your birth year, month, day and hour each get a "pillar" made of two characters: a Heavenly Stem (天干) on top and an Earthly Branch (地支) below. That is four pillars and eight characters in all.
The traditional starting point is the stem of the day pillar. It is called the Day Master (日主, rizhu, or 日元) and it represents the self. Everything else in the chart is read in relation to it: what supports it, what challenges it, what it controls and what it nourishes.
The Chinese zodiac animal is only the branch of your birth year. In BaZi it is just one of eight characters, which is why two people with the same animal can read quite differently. For the animal side, see our zodiac compatibility guide.
How the ten Day Masters work
The ten Heavenly Stems come from the five elements, each in a yang and a yin form. Yang is outward, bold, and simple. Yin is inward, subtle, and refined. In order they are:
| Stem | Pinyin | Element and polarity | Classic image |
|---|---|---|---|
| 甲 | Jia | Yang Wood | A great tree |
| 乙 | Yi | Yin Wood | Vines and flowers |
| 丙 | Bing | Yang Fire | The sun |
| 丁 | Ding | Yin Fire | Candle or lamp |
| 戊 | Wu | Yang Earth | A mountain |
| 己 | Ji | Yin Earth | Garden soil |
| 庚 | Geng | Yang Metal | Axe or raw steel |
| 辛 | Xin | Yin Metal | Jewelry, fine metal |
| 壬 | Ren | Yang Water | The ocean, a great river |
| 癸 | Gui | Yin Water | Rain, dew, mist |
The ten Day Masters, one by one
These are traditional character sketches. Real people are far more varied, and a Day Master is only one part of a chart, so read them like horoscope-style prompts for reflection.
甲 Jia: Yang Wood, the great tree
Upright, principled and a natural leader. Jia Wood grows toward the light and does not like to bend. Strengths: vision, integrity, steady growth. Watch for: stubbornness and difficulty asking for help.
乙 Yi: Yin Wood, the vine and the flower
Flexible, perceptive and resilient. Yi Wood bends around obstacles and finds a way through. Strengths: adaptability, charm, quiet persistence. Watch for: leaning too much on others, or people-pleasing.
丙 Bing: Yang Fire, the sun
Warm, generous and noticed. Bing lights up a room and shares freely. Strengths: optimism, openness, magnetism. Watch for: burning out, or overlooking details.
丁 Ding: Yin Fire, the candle
Thoughtful, intimate and perceptive. Ding is the lamp that makes a room cozy. Strengths: insight, craft, loyalty. Watch for: sensitivity, rumination, and flickering in strong wind. (2027 is a Ding year; see Fire Goat predictions.)
戊 Wu: Yang Earth, the mountain
Steady, protective and trustworthy. Wu is solid ground that others rely on. Strengths: dependability, patience, calm authority. Watch for: resistance to change, and holding too much in.
己 Ji: Yin Earth, the garden soil
Nurturing, practical and receptive. Ji soil grows things and takes care of people. Strengths: empathy, resourcefulness, hospitality. Watch for: worry, overgiving, and absorbing others' moods.
庚 Geng: Yang Metal, the axe
Decisive, direct and loyal. Geng cuts through nonsense. Strengths: courage, fairness, drive. Watch for: bluntness and rigidity; Geng often grows best when refined by challenge.
辛 Xin: Yin Metal, the jewel
Refined, precise and sensitive to beauty. Xin wants things to be polished and right. Strengths: taste, discernment, grace. Watch for: perfectionism and feeling easily bruised.
壬 Ren: Yang Water, the ocean
Expansive, adventurous and free-flowing. Ren wants room to move. Strengths: big-picture thinking, adaptability, courage. Watch for: restlessness and scattered energy.
癸 Gui: Yin Water, the rain
Intuitive, gentle and deep. Gui seeps into everything quietly. Strengths: imagination, empathy, subtle intelligence. Watch for: withdrawing, over-worrying, and absorbing too much.
How the elements relate
A Day Master is read in relation to the other elements in the chart through two cycles. In the generating (productive) cycle, Wood feeds Fire, Fire makes Earth (ash), Earth bears Metal, Metal gathers Water and Water nourishes Wood. In the controlling cycle, Wood breaks up Earth, Earth dams Water, Water quenches Fire, Fire melts Metal and Metal cuts Wood.
BaZi readers ask whether a Day Master is "strong" or "weak" (supported or drained by the rest of the chart), and which elements would balance it. A Yi Wood with lots of Water and Wood around is said to be well supported, for instance, while one surrounded by Metal is said to be under pressure. These are only a reading aid.
Why your Day Master isn't your whole chart
- Seven other characters shape the chart, including your month pillar, which is traditionally the strongest influence on the Day Master.
- Ten-year luck pillars describe the changing "weather" of each decade of life.
- Each year has its own pillar, which interacts with yours. 2027 is 丁未.
How do I find my Day Master?
You cannot work it out from the Gregorian calendar by hand with confidence, since the day pillar runs on a 60-day cycle and the year and month pillars turn at solar terms rather than January 1 or a lunar month. You need your birth date, ideally your birth time and place, and a reliable BaZi calculator. In Fivefold, you enter your birth details and the app calculates your four pillars, Day Master and element balance for you.
Two practical notes. First, if your birth time is unknown, the first three pillars (year, month, day) still give your Day Master. Second, different schools have slightly different conventions on when a day begins (midnight versus 11 PM) and on time zones, so a calculator should state which one it uses.
Day Master and the body
The five elements also run through Chinese medicine: Wood with the Liver, Fire with the Heart, Earth with the Spleen, Metal with the Lung and Water with the Kidney. Some people like to read their Day Master element alongside their body-type quiz result for a combined, reflective picture. For that, see the five elements and your personality. This is a way of making wellness feel personal, not a health assessment.
A grounded way to use BaZi
BaZi is a centuries-old system for self-understanding, and a growing number of people find it a useful vocabulary for temperament and timing. There is no scientific evidence that birth charts predict events, and the best practitioners say the same: it describes tendencies and invites you to choose. Take what resonates, leave the rest, and never make an important decision about money, health or relationships on a chart alone.

What is a Day Master in BaZi?
It is the Heavenly Stem of your day pillar, the character that represents you in your Four Pillars chart. There are ten possible Day Masters, formed from the five elements in yang and yin versions.
What are the 10 Day Masters?
Jia (yang Wood), Yi (yin Wood), Bing (yang Fire), Ding (yin Fire), Wu (yang Earth), Ji (yin Earth), Geng (yang Metal), Xin (yin Metal), Ren (yang Water) and Gui (yin Water), written 甲乙丙丁戊己庚辛壬癸.
How do I calculate my Day Master?
You need your birth date and a BaZi calculator, because the day pillar follows a 60-day cycle that cannot be read straight from the Gregorian calendar. Fivefold calculates it from your birth details. Your birth time is not needed for the Day Master itself, but near midnight it can matter.
Is my Day Master the same as my Chinese zodiac animal?
No. The animal is the branch of your birth year only. The Day Master is a stem from your birth day pillar, and it describes your element and polarity instead of an animal.
Does a strong Day Master mean a better chart?
Not necessarily. 'Strong' and 'weak' describe how supported the Day Master is by the rest of the chart, and a balanced chart is the goal. Traditions differ on how to judge this, and neither is better in itself.
Is BaZi accurate?
BaZi is a traditional framework, and there is no scientific evidence that it predicts events. Many people use it for reflection on temperament and timing, which is how we recommend using it.
